The world economic history shows that the share of the manufacturing sector increases as economies grow. It is perhaps for this reason that the size of the manufacturing sector is often thought to be one of the indicators of the level of economic development of a country. With economic progress however, the share of the manufacturing sector is expected to increase beyond its current level. \n\nIn order to promote growth in the industrial sector, it is essential that more information becomes available with respect to the present status of industry, its structure, its real contribution to GDP, etc.\n \nThe industrial sector in Zanzibar is relatively small and according to national accounts estimates in 2012 represented around 12.0 percent of GDP, whereby 1.0 percent mining, 3.9% manufacturing, 1.5% electricity and 5.6% construction. Most of the manufacturing establishments are still small and few large size establishments operate mainly in the production of soft drink and food processing.\n \nIn 2012, the number of large industrial establishments operating in Zanzibar was 235. The highest concentration of these establishments was in Mjini Magharibi 111 followed by Kusini Pemba 53, Kaskazini Unguja 25, Kaskazini Pemba 25 and Kusini Unguja 21. 223 establishments which are about 95 percent were wholly owned by nationals, while 10 establishments about 4.3 percent were reported to be wholly foreign owned, and the remaining 2 establishments about 0.7 percent were under joint venture ownership.\n\nFor the total industry sector (large) stood at 62 percent during 2012.Out of the total 235 industrial establishments in 2012 the majority (216 or 92 percent) were in Manufacturing Sector while 19 (8%) were in the Mining Sector. \n\nThe total number of persons engaged (large industries) was 4,280 of which 3,943 (92 percent) were in Manufacturing 337 (8%) were in Mining Sector. Mjini\/Magharibi region employed the largest number of workers (2,211 persons 51.7 percent). \n\nTotal number of persons employed was 2,611 workers of which 2,162 were male and 2,426 or 93 percent were in the Manufacturing Sector, while 185 or 7% were in Mining Sector. \n\nThe 223 national owned establishments engaged a total of 3,766 (88 percent) workers compared to 294 (7%) in foreign owned establishments. The jointly owned establishments had 220 (5.0%) persons.\n \nA total of Tshs. 5,267 million was paid by the industrial establishment as compensation to employees. \n\nThe total gross output (larger industries) or total value of goods and services produced by the industrial establishments was 70,680 million. Sales of goods amounted to Tshs. 248,539 million which 2% or Tsh.3, 687 million were exports mainly from food products. \n\nThe total cost of production i.e intermediate consumption was Tshs. 39,099 million of which 14,836 million or 38.0 percent represented the cost of raw materials imported.\n \nThe total value added was Tshs. 31,581 million. The composition of value added by industry shows that, Manufacturing had the largest contribution of Tshs. 30,238 or 96 percent of the total value added. \n\nAverage capacity utilization rate\n \nTotal number of establishments in all industries operating in Zanzibar 2012 (LARGE AND SMALL) was 2201. The number of person engaged was 10,427. \n\nThe total gross output (LARGE AND SMALL) or total value of goods and services produced by industrial establishments was Tshs. 145,416 million. \n\nThe total Intermediate Consumption or cost of production was Tshs. 73,456 million.\n\nThe total Value Added was Tshs. 71,960 million. \n\nThe compensation of Employees was Tshs. 10,176 million. \n\nThe census has provided a wealth of information on the different types of industrial activities in Zanzibar.","coll_dates":[{"start":"2013-03","end":"2013-04","cycle":"1 month"}],"nation":[{"name":"Zanzibar,Tanzania","abbreviation":"TZA"}],"geog_coverage":"Zanzibar\nRegions\nDistricts","analysis_unit":"Industries.","universe":"All industrial establishments with one or more workers operated in calendar year 2012.","data_kind":"Census\/enumeration data [cen]","notes":"The census covered all industrial establishments with one or more workers operated in calendar year 2012.
